
*Minister says...Drastic cuts to education unlikely Drastic cuts to education will not be forthcoming when the provincial budget is released on Feb. 9, said education minister Dave Hancock Monday during a tour of area schools.
“I’m not anticipating that we are going to be making cuts but there is always pressures on going forward and increased costs for pension liability; increased costs because there is student growth and so you have to factor those in. Brooks Jr. Hawks provincial bound The Smith Trucking Atom ‘A’ Hawks were crowned zone six champions this past week and now advance to the Atom ‘A’ Provincials by defeating the Chestermere Lakers in a two game total point series 11-0.
On Jan. 24 the Hawks traveled to Chestermere where they came away with a close 2-0 victory. The Hawks relied heavily on their penalty killers as a parade of infractions had the team playing shorthanded for 22 minutes. Although shorthanded for a third of the game, the Hawks still managed to outplay the opposition firing 41 shots at the Lakers’ goaltender. | Read Full Story>  |

Visual impressions hang at Brooks Library Brooks resident Richard Wood was chosen as the Artist of the Month by the Brooks Public Library after showing organizers some samples of his work.
“I asked Cathryn Krochak (library assistant) if it was possible to do an art show in the library. I showed her my portfolio of 100 pictures or so and I guess she liked it,” he said.
Unlike some artists who paint from memory or stare at a blank canvas until they see a picture, Wood takes photos and paints what he’s photographed using oils, pastel and pallet knives.
